Pemba recognises that considering Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) risks and opportunities is fundamental to building sustainable businesses and, in turn, enhancing long-term investment returns.

We believe ESG matters, from climate change and diversity to supply chain equity, are of global significance. They are integral to our day-to-day operations, our culture and accountability, and to the expectations of our stakeholders. Doing right by the environment and the communities we operate in isn’t separate from building great businesses. It is how we build them.

Our Approach

Pemba embeds ESG consideration across the full investment lifecycle, from the moment we first assess a potential partner company through to exit. This is core to how we evaluate risk, create value, and support our founders to build businesses that last.

We work alongside our partner companies to identify ESG risks and opportunities, set meaningful goals, and make tangible progress during our ownership. We believe that businesses which take these responsibilities seriously are stronger, more resilient, and better positioned for long-term success.

As a UN Principles for Responsible Investment (UNPRI) signatory, we are held to, and hold ourselves to, a high standard of accountability in how we manage ESG across our fund operations and portfolio.

Carbon Offsetting

In partnership with Tasman Environmental Markets (TEM), Pemba offsets its travel-related emissions by supporting a portfolio of high-integrity carbon projects from around the world.

Among these is the Nepal Clean Cookstoves project – a cause that resonates deeply with who we are. The word “Pemba” comes from Sherpa culture, and the determination of Pemba Doma, the first Nepalese female mountaineer to summit Everest, has always inspired our philosophy. Supporting communities in Nepal is part of our story.

Through TEM’s BlueHalo® technology, we are able to track and manage our environmental impact with transparency and rigour.
