If you could have dinner with any three people in the world (past or present), who would they be and why?

Shane Warne: one of my favourite sports personalities and the ultimate competitor. I’m sure Warnie would keep us entertained recounting his various ashes battles (and scandals!).

Michael Jordan: another fierce competitor that has made an enormous impact on sports. It’s worth noting Michael is also acquainted with Warnie. The reason for my selection is because I found The Last Dance fascinating as it was the first time I saw him speak candidly about his mentality and what he values. I’m sure we’d get the same candid Michael after a couple wines (or tequilas based on what he was drinking in The Last Dance).

Ricky Gervais: my favourite comedian who would be a welcome addition to the dinner table. I’m confident Ricky would be able to lighten the mood, especially if Michael took anything personally…

If you could pick up a new skill in an instant, what would it be and why?

I have been an ‘on and off’ chess player for the last few years. I haven’t been overly consistent so my Elo rating has plateaued. I would love to one-day wake up with the skill of a Grandmaster. Playing chess 10 moves in advance would be incredibly stimulating.

If you weren’t working in Private Equity or Finance in general, what other role or industry could you envisage yourself working in?

It’s not so much a field, but I am interested by the idea of being a founder. At Pemba, we work with successful founders every day, and their journeys are always fascinating. Particularly when you learn of a business’ humble beginnings and where it has ultimately got to. To me, building something from the ground up and seeing it scale sounds incredibly rewarding.

If you could only travel back to the same holiday destination for the rest of your life, where would you pick and why?

New Orleans would have to be my pick. The city has a fascinating history, awesome culture, and amazing food. Strolling through the shops of the Colonnade, tasting the various foods on offer is a great pastime. The city also hosts my favourite basketball team, the New Orleans Pelicans – getting out to the Smoothie King Centre is a must if you’re in town.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Everything happens for a reason. Whilst it’s cliché, a lot of my misfortunes and/or failures have landed me in a situation that I am extremely grateful for and wouldn’t change. If I look back, had those misfortunes turned into fortunes or failures turned into successes, I would not have learnt a lot of my most important life lessons.

Book recommendation: Shane Warne – No Spin
