Welcome back to another Meet the Team segment. In this segment, we speak with Monica, Associate Director in our Transact team.

If you were cast away on an island, what three things would you take with you and why?

A great coffee setup (because caffeine is a survival skill), a Kindle loaded with every book I’ve sworn I’d get to “someday,” and my husband … someone has to laugh at my terrible attempts to build a shelter.

What is something that the rest of the Pemba team might not know about you?

I switch languages mid-sentence when excited, can quote Mean Girls and Harry Potter word for word, and turn every car ride into a full-blown karaoke concert … basically, a triple threat.

If you could live anywhere in the world for a year, where would it be and why?

Kyoto: where time seems to slow down just enough to notice the beauty in every detail. I love how tradition and modern life coexist so gracefully — one moment you’re surrounded by centuries-old temples, the next you’re sipping matcha in a minimalist café. It’s serene, soulful, and endlessly inspiring.

Who has been your biggest inspiration and why?

My dad. He’s the perfect mix of calm wisdom and relentless drive. He’s taught me that success isn’t about being the loudest in the room, but about showing up with integrity, humour, and grit every single day.

What is your favourite highlight of your career to date and why?

Moving into private equity has been the most exciting chapter of my career so far — having the chance to back incredible founders and help them scale their businesses is both inspiring and deeply rewarding. There’s nothing better than seeing someone’s vision grow into something extraordinary and knowing you played a part in that story.

Oh, and moving to London — where I got to explore a new city, learn to love the rain, and discover that ‘just one coffee’ can cost £6.

What are you most excited for in the future and why?

I’m energised by the wave of innovation in healthcare and education — two sectors with the power to genuinely change lives. Supporting founders who push boundaries and create solutions with real, measurable impact is what motivates me every day. There’s something deeply fulfilling about backing people who dedicate their work to helping others grow — it’s impact, multiplied

Book recommendation:

This is a tough choice given I am a bit of a book worm…

I’d recommend two books (both fiction but based on historical events)

  1. All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr – It is one of those books that stays with you; beautifully written, emotional, and full of quiet strength. It reminds you how resilience and hope can shine through even in the darkest times
  2. Trust by Hernan Diaz is a masterclass in perspective — a layered, clever exploration of wealth, power, and the stories we choose to believe. It is brilliantly challenging, making you rethink how truth and perception shape the world.
