The Alpinists, an exciting new series by Pemba that showcases businesses achieving remarkable heights in their industries. Sequana stands out as one of Australia’s premier specialist consultancies, committed to revolutionising the nation’s water infrastructure.
In September 2024, Pemba joined Sequana as a growth partner, united by a shared vision: to elevate Sequana as Australia’s foremost independent water and environmental expert, delivering impactful results for clients and communities alike.
Recently, Johnnie Holding, Pemba’s Investment Director, interviewed Sequana’s CEO, Frank Fisseler, to discuss Sequana’s journey, the challenges of scaling, and the future of Australia’s water sector.
Hi Frank, thank you for taking the time to talk with us. You have a fascinating background. Could you tell us more about what brought you to Australia, how you met your business partner, Mike Walsh, and what inspired you to co-found Sequana?
I’m a lawyer by training and began my career in venture capital in Switzerland. After migrating to Australia in 2006, I found my true passion in managing large scale, complex projects. Mike and I first crossed paths over 16 years ago, both at important stages in our careers. I was the Deputy Project Director of the Victorian Desalination Project, and Mike was leading a major recycled water initiative with the Department of Sustainability and Environment in Victoria.
Our collaboration was grounded in shared values including our most fundamental value that we are driven to get things done, complementary skills, and a deep commitment to the water industry. A few years later, we realised we both wanted to build something unique, a client-side advisory firm combining the strategic rigor of a Big 4 consultancy with technical engineering expertise, focused on people, culture, and long-term community impact. From this shared vision, Sequana was born: a company dedicated to tackling ambitious and complex projects, supporting our team, and delivering solutions that serve our clients for the long haul.
As a founder-owned, founder-run company, what were some of the biggest challenges you faced?
The initial challenges were both personal and professional. Scaling a company as a founder means every decision impacts the vision you’ve worked so hard to build. Early on, we faced the dual challenge of attracting top talent while preserving our core values and high standards. Maintaining a culture that was people centred and purpose driven, especially in a high growth environment, required commitment and constant focus. For us, the balance between growth and staying true to our principles was a constant, but we believe it has ultimately set us apart in the industry.
The global water market is evolving quickly. What do you see as the key opportunities and challenges for the sector over the next decade?
The water sector faces urgent challenges: infrastructure sustainability, climate adaptation, and securing water resources for future generations. But with these challenges come immense opportunities for innovation. At Sequana, we see these complexities as a call to action. We’re pushing boundaries, modernising or building new water infrastucture and embedding sustainable practices into every project. It’s about building a resilient future, one where water infrastructure not only meets today’s needs but also adapts to tomorrow’s growth and climate change challenges.
Why were you looking for a growth partner, and why did you choose Pemba?
For starters, Pemba is arguably the most relatable and likeable private equity team in the industry. We were at a stage where we needed a strong strategic partner to help us scale our impact. For us, it wasn’t just about capital; it was about finding a true partner who shared our values and could support our ambitious goals. Pemba’s impressive track record and founder-centric approach made them an ideal fit. Their support will enable us to expand our team, enter new markets, and drive innovative solutions in the water and environmental sectors. With Pemba, we’re not just growing; we’re setting new industry standards, with plans to advance through both organic growth and smart acquisitions over the next five years.
How is Sequana different from other firms in the water industry, and what attracts people to join the Sequana team?
Sequana’s difference is rooted in our commitment to people, culture, and impact. We’ve built an environment where people are supported to grow and encouraged to innovate. Our focus on building long-term relationships with clients and delivering real, lasting value resonates within communities. People are drawn to Sequana because they see an opportunity to make a meaningful impact whilst working with the best people in the industry. We’ve also invested in initiatives like the Sequana Mentorship Program and the Sequana Academy to prepare the next generation of leaders.
We believe that by investing in our people and developing a positive culture, we are creating a place where talent thrives and where our team can help shape the future of water infrastructure.
What are you passionate about outside of work?
Outside of work, I’m passionate about spending time with my three kids and being near or in the water, whether it’s scuba diving or spending time near the ocean. There’s something incredibly grounding about the sea that allows me to clear my mind and refocus. I also have a deep appreciation for community involvement, from supporting local sports to cultural initiatives that bring people together.
Do you have any advice for other business founders?
Starting a business is hard work. Find trusted partners who complement your skills and stay true to your values, especially when faced with tough decisions. Building a company isn’t just about profit; it’s about creating an environment where people feel valued and inspired. Surround yourself with people who both challenge and support you. Remember, success is a journey, a marathon, not a sprint. Embrace the highs and lows, and don’t forget to enjoy every step of the way.
